What it is
NonWorkingDays lists the public holidays and other non-working days of 54 countries today (Europe, the United States and Canada), year by year: dates, weekdays, regional holidays, substitute days, long weekends and bridge days. It is free and needs no account. Each country's pages are also published in the country's own language.
What counts as a non-working day
A public holiday set for a whole country is shown first. Regional holidays (a Spanish autonomous community, a German state, a Portuguese district, a US state, a Canadian province), bank holidays, optional days, half days and observances are listed separately and labelled, because they are not a day off for everyone. A holiday that falls on a weekend and the substitute day given for it are kept apart.
Where the dates come from
The dates are built from the open-source python-holidays project (MIT licence), whose rules for each country cite the law or official calendar they follow. We compare them with official government sources, country by country, and record the result, the date and the links on the Sources and accuracy page. A country we have not yet compared is labelled “dataset only”.
Where a date is uncertain (holidays set by the moon, or years an authority has not yet announced) the page says so instead of guessing.
Languages
The site is in English. Each country page is also available in the language of that country where we have a reviewed translation, with its own address and title so that people searching in that language can find it.
