Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is the second of the two main Islamic festivals. It commemorates the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim, known in the Bible as Abraham, to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, who then provided a ram in the son's place. Muslims overwhelmingly identify the son as Ismail. The festival coincides with the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, and the Day of Arafat, the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah and the central day of the pilgrimage, comes the day before. It is also called the Greater Eid (al-Eid al-Kabir), and Bakrid or Bakri Eid in South Asia.
The day opens with a congregational prayer in the morning, followed by the sacrifice of an animal such as a sheep, goat, cow or camel by those who can afford it. The meat is generally divided into three parts, one for the family, one for relatives and friends and one for the poor. Celebrations usually run for several days. In Turkey and the Balkans the festival is called Kurban Bayrami, the Feast of Sacrifice.
