Ohi Day, or Oxi Day, is a national holiday in Greece and Cyprus that commemorates the Greek refusal of an Italian ultimatum on 28 October 1940. The Greek word ochi, pronounced oh-hee, means no. The holiday is also known as Anniversary of the No, and it celebrates the beginning of Greece's involvement in the Second World War. The day is celebrated with national flags and patriotic songs. It is also called Epetios tou Ochi in Greek, meaning the anniversary of the No. Many Greeks regard it as a moment of national pride.
In the early hours of 28 October 1940, the Italian ambassador in Athens, Emanuele Grazzi, presented the Greek prime minister, Ioannis Metaxas, with an ultimatum demanding that Italian troops be allowed to enter Greece. Metaxas is recorded as replying in French that it meant war, and popular memory renders his answer as the single word no, although the precise words are debated. Italy attacked Greece within hours, and Greek forces pushed the Italian army back into Albania, achieving one of the first Allied successes of the war. The war then continued for months.
