What is Late Summer Bank Holiday?
The Late Summer Bank Holiday is a public holiday in Gibraltar and on the Isle of Man, held on the last Monday of August. It is a secular holiday at the end of the summer, giving a long weekend that is often used for short breaks, family visits and outdoor events before the new school year begins. Both places set their public holidays by local legislation. The Isle of Man also calls it the Summer Bank Holiday.
Gibraltar also observes a Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday of May, and its National Day on 10 September, which commemorates the 1967 referendum in which residents voted overwhelmingly to remain under British sovereignty, follows a couple of weeks later. The Isle of Man has its own cycle of holidays, including Tynwald Day on 5 July. In both places the holiday falls on the same Monday as the Summer Bank Holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Why it is observed
Bank holidays in Britain date from the Bank Holidays Act 1871, introduced by the banker and politician John Lubbock, which let banks close on named days and allowed payments due on those days to be made on the next working day. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 moved the summer holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from the first to the last Monday of August. Gibraltar, which sets its holidays each year by a Bank and Public Holidays Order, and the Isle of Man, which legislates through its Bank Holidays Act 1989, follow the late August pattern.
How the date is set
The Late Summer Bank Holiday in Gibraltar and the Isle of Man is the last Monday in August, so it falls between 25 and 31 August.
How it is observed
The Late Summer Bank Holiday is a public holiday in Gibraltar and the Isle of Man. Banks, public offices and schools are closed, and public transport usually runs a holiday timetable. Many shops and restaurants stay open, especially in tourist areas, but some businesses in these small communities close for the day, so check opening hours. Ferries, flights and accommodation can be busy. Entitlements to pay or time off depend on local law, the employer and the contract.
