What is Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God?

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is a Catholic feast honouring Mary under the title Theotokos, God-bearer, which the Council of Ephesus affirmed in AD 431. It is a holy day of obligation in places that have not abolished the obligation, since it is the octave of Christmas. On this site it is listed for Vatican City, where it is a public holiday. The feast opens the new calendar year in the Catholic Church and gives it a religious start.

The day has a second meaning. Pope Paul VI established the World Day of Peace, first observed on 1 January 1968, and each year the Pope issues a message for it. Mass in Saint Peter's Basilica is usually celebrated by the Pope, and the Angelus is recited at noon in Saint Peter's Square. The title Mother of God was at the centre of early debates about the nature of Christ.

Why it is observed

Rome kept 1 January as the octave day of Christmas from the early seventh century, remembering the eighth day when, according to Luke, Jesus was circumcised and named. An early Roman feast of the Mother of God is also recorded on this date. Pope John XXIII's 1960 calendar dropped the mention of the circumcision, and the revised Roman calendar of 1969 gave the day its current name, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. The title Theotokos, affirmed at Ephesus, is an old one, and Paul VI's 1974 document Marialis Cultus connected the day to peace.

How the date is set

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is fixed on 1 January, the octave day of Christmas, eight days after Christmas Day. In the Catholic calendar it is the same day as New Year's Day.

How it is observed

In Vatican City, 1 January is a public holiday both as New Year's Day and as this feast. Offices and museums are closed, and the Pope's Mass and Angelus draw large crowds. In other countries 1 January is a holiday as New Year's Day, and the Marian feast is kept in church. Visitors to Rome should check the programme of papal services ahead, as times can change. Pay and time off depend on national law and the contract.
