Saturday and Sunday · A public holiday does not always close every business. Essential services, shops and some industries keep working, and pay rules differ by country and contract.
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is a Catholic feast honouring Mary under the title Theotokos, God-bearer, which the Council of Ephesus affirmed in AD 431. It is a holy day of obligation in places that have not abolished the obligation, since it is the octave of Christmas. On this site it is listed for Vatican City, where it is a public holiday. The feast opens the new calendar year in the Catholic Church and gives it a religious start.
The day has a second meaning. Pope Paul VI established the World Day of Peace, first observed on 1 January 1968, and each year the Pope issues a message for it. Mass in Saint Peter's Basilica is usually celebrated by the Pope, and the Angelus is recited at noon in Saint Peter's Square. The title Mother of God was at the centre of early debates about the nature of Christ.
