Saint Andrew's Day
Saint Andrew's Day honours the Apostle Andrew, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus and the brother of Simon Peter, who was a fisherman in Galilee before he followed Jesus. According to tradition he preached in Asia Minor and the lands around the Black Sea and was crucified at Patras in Greece on an X-shaped cross. He is the patron saint of Scotland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine, among others. Andrew's name means manly or brave in Greek, and many Orthodox churches are dedicated to him. His feast is a major one in Orthodox countries.
In Romania the day is called Sfântul Andrei and honours him as the Apostle of the Romanians and the protector of the country, since according to tradition he preached in Scythia Minor, the region of Dobruja on the Black Sea coast, where a cave associated with him is a pilgrimage site. The Romanian Orthodox Church marks the feast with liturgies, and many people named Andrei or Andreea celebrate their name day. The holiday is also a patron day for many local communities, with processions and church services. The patron-saint tradition is strong.
