Catholic Christmas Day

Catholic Christmas Day is the Western Christmas on 25 December, the festival of the birth of Jesus, in countries where the Catholic community is a minority and a separate holiday has been recognised. In Belarus, where the majority are Orthodox, Catholic Christmas on 25 December was made a public holiday alongside the Orthodox Christmas of 7 January. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is the Christmas of the Catholic community, who are mostly Croats. The Catholic communities in both countries are a minority, and the recognition of their holiday is part of a wider approach to religious diversity.

Catholic observance includes Advent preparations, the midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, the nativity scene in homes and churches, and a family meal. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, many Catholic families follow Croatian customs such as sowing wheat on Saint Lucy's Day, 13 December, so that the green shoots can decorate the Christmas table, and eating special dishes on Christmas Eve, while in Belarus, Catholic Christmas is associated with Polish traditions such as the Wigilia supper. After the midnight Mass, families gather for a meal that is usually meatless on Christmas Eve and more festive on Christmas Day.
