What is Pentecost Monday?

Pentecost Monday is the second day of the Pentecost festival. In German-speaking countries it is Pfingstmontag, in France Lundi de Pentecôte, in the Netherlands Tweede Pinksterdag, and in English it was traditionally Whit Monday. In Greece and Cyprus the Orthodox Monday is the feast of the Holy Spirit. A second festival day after the great feasts is an old custom in Western Europe, and the Monday has long been used for pilgrimages, fairs and outings.

For most people today it is a spring day off for family excursions, hikes and regional events. In Cyprus it is the day of the Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood, when people gather by the sea for water games, music and fairs; the Larnaca Kataklysmos fair is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. In parts of Germany, traditional Pentecost riding processions and Pfingstritte are held, and many German, Dutch and Belgian families use the long weekend to travel.

Why it is observed

Whit Monday has been a holiday in much of Europe since the Middle Ages, when the great feasts were kept for several days. In England it was one of the four bank holidays created by the Bank Holidays Act 1871. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 replaced the movable Whit Monday with the Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday of May, so it is no longer a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. Cyprus's Kataklysmos is linked in popular tradition to the biblical flood and to the Holy Spirit feast; its older origins are debated. In Orthodox countries the Monday is dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

How the date is set

Pentecost Monday is the day after Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Easter Sunday. It falls between 11 May and 14 June on the Western calendar (17 May in 2027) and later in Orthodox countries (21 June in 2027).

How it is observed

Pentecost Monday is a public holiday in many European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Cyprus, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. Banks, offices and schools generally close. France has the unusual rule that the day is a journée de solidarité: it is officially a working day for many employees, with the extra work unpaid and funding care for older and disabled people, though the details can be set by agreement with the employer. Because the date moves with Easter, it falls on 17 May in 2027 in the West and 21 June in the Orthodox calendar.
