What is Statehood Day?

Statehood Day is the name given to several national holidays in Central and South-Eastern Europe. In the Czech Republic it is 28 September, the feast of Saint Wenceslas, the tenth-century duke honoured as patron of the Czech lands, traditionally said to have been killed in 935. Croatia keeps 30 May, the day in 1990 when the first democratically elected multiparty parliament met, and Slovenia 25 June, the anniversary of the 1991 declaration of independence. Many Czechs use the day for pilgrimages to Stará Boleslav, where Wenceslas is believed to have been murdered.

In Lithuania, Statehood Day is 6 July, tied to the coronation of Mindaugas as king in 1253. Serbia celebrates it on 15 and 16 February, marking the first uprising against Ottoman rule in 1804 and the first Serbian constitution of 1835. Montenegro marks 13 July, linked to the recognition of the country at the 1878 Congress of Berlin and to the 1941 uprising. Bosnia and Herzegovina keeps 25 November, for the 1943 session of its wartime state assembly, ZAVNOBiH. Many of these countries also have a separate Independence Day.

Why it is observed

The holidays share a purpose, which is to link a modern state to a longer tradition of statehood. In the Czech case, the date was made a state holiday under Act 245/2000 and ties the modern republic to the Přemyslid dynasty, to which Wenceslas belonged. Croatia has moved the date back and forth: the holiday was shifted to 25 June in the early 2000s, and a law adopted in 2019 restored 30 May from 2020, while 25 June became Independence Day, a commemoration and no longer a day off. Slovenia's day looks to the break from Yugoslavia in 1991 and Lithuania's to the thirteenth century. Choosing the date often involved debate about which moment best represents the nation's beginning.

How the date is set

There is no single date. Statehood Day is a generic name for a day that celebrates the founding or continuity of a country as a state, and the date and the event behind it depend on the country. All are fixed calendar dates.

How it is observed

Where Statehood Day is a public holiday, banks, offices and schools are closed, and there are official ceremonies, wreath-laying, concerts and in some countries military displays. Dates are fixed, though some countries move or compensate the day off when it falls on a weekend. In 2027 the dates include 15 February in Serbia, 30 May in Croatia, 25 June in Slovenia, 6 July in Lithuania, 13 July in Montenegro and 28 September in the Czech Republic. Pay and time off depend on national law and the contract.
