All Saints' Day
All Saints' Day is the Catholic and Anglican festival honouring all the saints, known and unknown, who are in heaven; many Lutheran churches keep it as well. It is followed on 2 November by All Souls' Day, when Catholics pray for the dead. In popular practice the two days run together as a time for remembering the dead, and on 1 November many families visit cemeteries. The word Halloween comes from All Hallows' Eve, the evening before.
In Poland, France, Italy, Croatia and Hungary, graves are cleaned and decorated with chrysanthemums and candles, and cemeteries glow in the evening. In Finland and Sweden candles are lit on graves as well, and in Spain and Portugal special sweets and breads are made. The atmosphere in Europe is quiet and reverent, in contrast to the party reputation of Halloween on 31 October, which has its own, separate customs.
